Description: | The painting shows Mr and Mrs R H Butler and their daughters. Robert Butler was Director of Mitchell and Butlers Brewery in the 1930s, who operated from Cape Hill Brewery in Birmingham. The company has now become part of the Bass group. Bernard Fleetwood Walker was born in Birmingham in 1893. He first traines as a goldsmith and he developed his interest in painting through low relief and three dimensional work. He was trained at Birmingham School of Arts and later in London and Paris. After the First World War he taught art at King Edwards Grammer School in Aston. While he was there he designed and made some avant-garde scenery for the plays, which were produced there. In 1929 he went to lecture at Birmingham School of painitng under H Holden, concentrating on developing his carrer as a portrait painter. He became particularly well known for his portraits of children, whom he painted with vibrancy and sensitivity. Fleetwood Walker was remembered as a brilliant teacher who had a profound influence on his pupils. He had liberal views and was able to understand and talk about contemporary painters with great vision. He became a Royal Academician in 1956. He was a member of the Royal Watercolour Society and President of the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists. He was one of the most prolific painters of the early twentieth century. The painting has a delightful informality and is clearly designed to show 'the family man'. The family are dressed in their casual clothes and depicted out of doors as though enjoying an outing. There is a great deal of attention to detail in the clothes, the shoes and the folds of the fabric. It is a time capsule of 1930s life.

They appear very relaxed and at ease. | License: | http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0/uk/ | Publisher: | Wolverhampton Arts and Museums Service | Rights holder: | Bernard Fleetwood Walker | Subjects: | People and roles Portrait painting Fine arts Oil painting Oil Paintings Family Breweries Family portraits Children Art collections | Temporal: | 1936
