Description: | Oval medallion, transfer painted in brown, of George II (1683-1760) after a bust engraved by John Sigismund Tanner (fl. 1728-1775,) for the contemporary coinage. The bust was adopted for gold coinage in 1739, for silver in 1743, and for copper in 1740. For reproduction by transfer on Battersea enamels, the design was re-engraved by Simon Francois Ravenet (1706-1774). The profile bust faces left, with long wig and laurel wreath. Original copper-gilt rococo frame. Ravenet came to England in 1744 at the invitation of Hogarth, who wished him to engrave his 'Marriage a la Mode'. He became one of the leading engravers of his day and thus was commissioned by Theodore Stephen Janssen to make engravings for enamels produced and transfer printed at Battersea. In view of the great amount of work Ravenet did at this time for other publishers, He could not have been a full-time employee at Battersea, Though one of his pupils, John Hall, was apprenticed to Janssen in 1754.
