Description: | The Sumbeam-Mabley vehicle was produced by Mr. Mabley Smith for the Sunbeam Bicycle Company in 1901. The bodywork resembles an S-shape with the driver sitting at the back and steering both the front and rear wheels by tiller. The engine, mounted at the front, is a 2.75 hp De Dion and transmission is by belt to a countershaft and from there by pulleys and two-speed chain-gear to the central driving axle, which is rigidly attached to the tubular frame. The front and rear wheels, which are not in line, are softly sprung and both are pivoted for steering, so that the car can almost turn about its centre. It was considered rather eccentric even at the time, but despite this and its somewhat ungainly movement, the car sold reasonably well until 1905. | License: | http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0/uk/ | Publisher: | Wolverhampton Archives | Rights holder: | Wolverhampton Archives | Subjects: | Cars Photograph Car industry Photographs | Temporal: | [1960s] | Source: | Black Country History | Identifier: | http://www.blackcountryhistory.org/colle... | Go to resource |
