Description: | A view of Darlington Street looking towards the spire of St. Mark's church in Chapel Ash in the distance. Also in the distance can just be seen the distinctive front towers of the Methodist Chapel (erected in 1901). In the foreground are the junctions with North Street (right) and Victoria Street (left). The premises of B.M.C. Carpets can be seen on the right hand corner, and Burton the tailors on the left (closed in 1992). It has now been taken over by Beatties Department Store (now House of Fraser) which can be seen further down on the left. The image helps to depict the fact that at this time, motorised transport was predominant. Note the overhead tram lines. Darlington Street was cut through in 1821 and named after Lord Darlington, who later sold the land to the Town Commissioners. | License: | http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0/uk/ | Publisher: | Wolverhampton Archives | Rights holder: | Wolverhampton City Council | Subjects: | Chapels Photograph Photographs Streets | Temporal: | c. 1959 | Source: | Black Country History | Identifier: | http://www.blackcountryhistory.org/colle... | Go to resource |
