Description: | Darlington Street at the junctions with Waterloo Road (right) and School Street (left). The building on the right houses the headquarters of Wolverhampton Gas Company (erected 1880). To the left is the old Weslyan Methodist Chapel (before it was rebuilt as Darlington Methodist Chapel in 1901). The spire of St. Mark's church in Chapel Ash can be seen in the distance. Although tram lines have been laid, it is likely that horses would have pulled the trams at this time. The image also depicts the fact that horse-drawn vehicles were still the predominant form of transport. Darlington Street was cut through in 1821 and named after Lord Darlington, who later sold the land to the Town Commissioners. | License: | http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0/uk/ | Publisher: | Wolverhampton Archives | Rights holder: | Wolverhampton Archives | Subjects: | Chapels Photograph Photographs Streets | Temporal: | [1890s] | Source: | Black Country History | Identifier: | http://www.blackcountryhistory.org/colle... | Go to resource |
