Description: | These books provide a statistical breakdown for each inquest undertaken by the Coroner, as well as deaths investigated by the Coroner in which no inquest was held. Arranged chronologically, they both breakdown each case into the statistics described below and also provide running totals. There are three main categories of information that the Coroner supplies. The first category is to do with the subject of the inquest, giving the inquest number, the date of inquest, the name of the subject. After the first volume, several sub-categories for the age of the subject, splitting infants into legitimate and illegitimate, as well as an unknown age, were slimmed down and replaced by the ability to record whether the subject was mentally ill, an inmate of an institution, or an 'other'. Each of those sub-categories is then sub-divided into male or female. The Coroner's fees and expenses are also recorded in this then a breakdown of the inquest. The second main category is for recording verdicts. Each with several sub-categories, broadly, it can be recorded as to death being unlawful (including suicide), neglect, exposure, excess (eg drinking), accidental, misadventure, still born or an open verdict, all of which are split into male and female. The third main category was for supplementary particulars on cases of child and infant inquests, focusing on children suffocated whilst in bed with parents and newly-born babies. There is one section for inquests on treasure trove. By 1957 there were so many deaths investigated that a new template for the book was introduced. The first category was changed to reflect cases in which there were inquests, post mortems and where no post mortem was considered necessary. The second category was a breakdown for type of verdicts, sex and age. The third category was for the number of inquests held, for treasure trove, and by order of the courts. The final category now dealt with adjournments where the case was not resumed.
