Description: | Victory Medal (also called Inter allied Victory medal) awarded to troops following the First World War. Measures 36mm diameter, made from copper lacquered in bronze. A similar medal was awarded by most allied countries, though this medal is the British Empire variant which lists the dates of the conflict between 1914 to 1919, while allies who used a similar medal used the dates 1914 to 1918. Though the conflict ended in 1918, the British did not officially end the conflict until 1919 under common law, though this was mainly a legal function. The front of the medal depicts the figure of Victory, winged and with one hand extended and the other holding a palm branch. On the reverse, surrounded by a laurel wreath, are the words "THE GREAT WAR FOR CIVILISATION 1914-1918". This medal was always awarded with another medal, normally the 1914 Star, the 1914-1915 Star or the British War Medal. When these medals were awarded together, they were often referred to by the men as "Pip, Squeak and Wilfred". The ribbon for the medal (not included in this item) was a double rainbow. This medal includes the rainbow ribbon it was hung from, but not the attachment for the two. Around the edge of this medal is printed: "C-1047 CPL. F. HIDENS. K. R. RIF. C."
