Description: | This wood-engraving shows horses at full gallop heading for the winning post. The Bewick workshop engraved many programmes for north-east race meetings. Horse racing was extremely popular in the early-nineteenth century. The Pease Collection contains many race programmes for the area including Swalwell, South Shields, Lambton Park, Waldridge Fell and Bill's Moor at Elsdon. The woodblock from which this print was made must have broken at some stage, as the jagged white split in the middle of the picture indicates. | Publisher: | Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums | Temporal: | Production date: 1810 | Source: | Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums | Creator: | Thomas Bewick | Identifier: | http://www.twmuseums.org.uk/discoveringb... | Go to resource |
