Description: | The River Tyne is the subject of many paintings by the north-east artist Luke Clennell. In this watercolour, a collier brig is being loaded up with coal poured down a spout from a wagon at the coal staiths. Staiths were waterside coal-loading jetties. From here, coal from Newcastle was taken down-river to the sea for export worldwide. A glass kiln (or cone) is seen in the background, possibly the Lemington cone. Glass-making was another of Newcastle's major industries in the late-eighteenth century, when this picture was painted. | Publisher: | Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums | Temporal: | Production date: 1800 to 1815 | Source: | Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums | Creator: | Luke Clennell | Identifier: | http://www.twmuseums.org.uk/discoveringb... | Go to resource |
