Description: | Original prints make up close to half of the artworks within the University of Stirling’s Art Collection. Prints have been strongly represented since the inception of the Art Collection in 1967; in fact the majority of artworks collected during the 1960s and 1970s were prints. This allows the collection to act as a snapshot of printmaking during the period around the University’s foundation in 1967.
The print collection is not only large; it is also of high quality. It includes the work of a number of nationally and internationally significant artist, while it also contains artworks by influential Scottish printmakers.
Among the 30 artists of international standing included in the print collection are Norman Ackroyd, Anthony Benjamin, Patrick Caulfield, Robyn Denny, Bridget Riley, Dame Elizabeth Frink and Bob Chaplin.
In terms of the Scottish context the collection contains, among others, artworks by Willie Rodger, Ian Hamilton Finlay, Alan Davie, Wilhelmina Barns-Graham, Alastair Gray and Norman McLaren. The collection includes work by two founder members of important Scottish printmakers’ workshops: Philip Reeves, who was a founder of the first Scottish Printmakers’ Workshop, in Edinburgh, 1967 and also a founder member of the Glasgow Print Studio, 1972; and Malcolm McCoig and Ian Fleming, two of the cofounders of the Peacock Printmakers in Aberdeen, 1974. Other founder members of the Scottish Printmakers' Workshop represented in the collection are Roy Wood and Kim Kempshall, while Terry Keast was involved in the founding of the Fife Dunfermline Print Workshop in 1982.
As well as setting up printmakers’ workshops, Philip Reeves also taught art at the Glasgow School of Art from 1954 and was Head of Printmaking from 1970 – 1991. He is recognised as being the first artist in Scotland to adopt the modern attitude to printmaking propagated in Paris and New York during the mid-20th century. A number of other influential artists teaching in art colleges throughout Scotland have printed artworks in the collection, including Ian Fleming, who specialised in lithography, colour woodcuts and engravings, teaching at Grays School of Art from 1931 to 1948, and Principal there from 1954 – 1972; Francis Walker, who taught drawing and painting at Gray’s School of Art from 1958 - 1985; Barbara Rae, who lectured in drawing, painting and printmaking at Aberdeen College of Education from 1972 – 1974 and lectured in drawing and painting at Glasgow School of Art from 1975 – 1996; Dame Elizabeth Blackadder, who lectured at the Edinburgh College of Art (ECA) from 1962 – 1986; and John Houston, who also lectured at ECA from 1955 – 1989.
As well as featuring work from the 1960s and 1970s, this collection also contains more recent prints. The prints by Wilhelmina Barns-Graham date from 2002; and as well as featuring Alan Davie’s 1967 lithograph 'Zurich Improvisations VII', purchased by the University in 1967, the Art Collection also contain’s Davie’s 2010 print 'Grangemouth Image'. Similarly, although linocuts by Willie Rodger were among the first works of art purchased for the Art Collection, over the last 40 years prints by Willie Rodger have continued to be collected and the collection contains work from across 4 decades of his working practice. In 2010 the Art Collection purchased a new work by Scottish artist and printmaker, Katy Dove, which takes its inspiration from the printed artworks of Norman McLaren.
Among the prints in the collection there are etchings, linocuts, lithographs, monoprints, monotypes, screenprints amd woodcuts.
