Description: | Oil on canvas 0.746 x 0.622. John Porter (1736-1802) is described in Holland as "a highly respectable grocer in Sheffield who died in 1802." Holland states: "the benevolence and integrity indicated by the countenance of the living individual are well rendered by the painter." (as Holland was writing circa 1850-51 it is difficult to understand how he knew this, unless he was acquainted with Porter in his earlier days.) This portrait of No. 21 or 22 in Holland's list in Memorials. | License: | http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/2.0/uk/ |
