Description: | The University's collections of furniture are dominated by the work of the Scottish architect and designer, Charles Rennie Mackintosh (1868-1928). This comprises over 60 unique items representing in particular Mackintosh's work for Miss Cranston's tea rooms and domestic commissions. The major part of the collection is displayed in the reassembled principal interiors from his Glasgow house - presented as an integral part of the Hunterian Art Gallery. The furniture on display in The Mackintosh House constitute a portfolio of Mackintosh's design work, as they are often examples of designs prepared for other clients. In addition a further display interior presents the late guest bedroom furniture from 78 Derngate, Northampton (1917).
The 3-dimensional objects are supported by a holding of some 200 furniture and interior designs which document Mackintosh's output from the 1890s to 1920. The most notable examples of work by his immediate contemporaries are three rare items by J. Herbert McNair - a writing cabinet, desk and chair, exhibited at the International Exhibition of Modern Decorative Art, Turin, 1902.
The Whistler Collection includes key pieces. Two were created by Whistler: the painted screen Blue and Silver: Old Battersea Bridge' and the cabinet, painted by Whistler and designed by E.W. Godwin, Harmony in Yellow and Gold: The Butterfly Cabinet'. In addition there is a group of late 18th and 19th-century furniture which formed part of the furnishings of Whistler's homes and studios. This includes a group of easels.
Finally the University owns a group of historic furniture related to the history of the University. Chief among these are the 18th-century Blackstone chair and the 16th-century press. The chair, made in Glasgow in 1775-76, was used for over two hundred years for oral examinations, conducted in Latin or Greek. The tradition of sitting on the Black-staine' for an examination was common to all Scottish Universities. The University Clerk's cupboard, known as the Clerk's Press, was acquired in 1634 to house the earliest records of the University. | Subjects: | furniture Mackintosh Whistler | Source: | Hunterian Museum | Address: | University of Glasgow,
