Description: | Miscellaneous apparatus associated with Lord Kelvin's lecture theatre experiments.
Box 1 Contents:
1. Four wire shapes for blowing soap bubbles (two square and made of nickel plated brass, two circular and made of copper). 19th or early 20th century. Used in demonstration of the minimum partition coefficient theory.
2. Large boxed set of brass weights originallly 1g to 1 kg with sub gram riders (three brass weights missing, only a 200 mg platinum rider extant). Tweezers are present. Made by Baird & Tatlock c.1890 and and inscribed 'reserved for the lecture theatre' in Kelvin's hand.
3. A five-barrelled bunsen burner, 19th or early 20th century. Has the remains of some Dutch metal gilding of the type favoured by manufacturers e.g. W.B. Nicolson. The regulators from alll five barrels are missing and three have crude handmade replacements.
4. A large grey painted wooden cube and pyramid, possibly used for demonstrations of gravitational stability or optics.
5. Four biconvex crown glass lenses (three f app 4 cm, one unknown)
6. A small rectangular piece of opalised glass
7. A large test tube containg an unidentified viscous liquid like paraffin of glycerine.
Box 2. contents:
1. A large slab of Wood's filter glass ribbed on one side and broken at on end. Probably from a large ultra violet light source.
2. Two very large test tubes containing an unidentified liquid (possible aqueous solution).
