Description: | LO 205 (spurious departmental catalogue number in white ink). MILLER EDINBURGH (makers Trade name). DES GREGORY,James 1661 [Aberdeenshire] [England] MANU MILLER,[John, junior] between 1769 and 1803 Edinburgh Scotland DES after DIGGES,Leonard. circa 1550 Wooten Court, Kent, England This Gregorian reflecting telescope has an apperture of four and a quarter inches. Curiously the collector is held in place by wedges of lolded paper. The focus of the optics is behind the collector at approximately where the cross wires would have been. The optics are not achromatic and the small apperture in the eye piece was used to eliminate some of the abberations. Being made probably after 1769 this instrument is not one used to observe the transits of venus in 1761 and 1769 which rekindled interest in astronomy in the later half of the 18th century. | License: | http://www.hmag.gla.ac.uk/spirit/rights/ | Publisher: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Rights holder: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Subjects: | SCIENTIFIC COLLECTION : | Source: | Hunterian Museum | Creator: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Identifier: | http://www.huntsearch.gla.ac.uk/cgi-bin/... | Language: | en-GB | Go to resource |
