DES after VOLTA,Alessandro,Giuseppe,Anastasio,Count. 1775 [Como] [Italy] The instrument worked by charging the electrophorous in the base via the small brass knob under the base. The electrophorous consists of a block of beeswax in a shallow tin tray. The hydrogen which ignited the oil lamp (nolonger extant) was generated in a small glass bottle sitting in a vessel within the header tank the generated hydrogen was then passed through a tube into the lower storage cell water in the header tank then kept this under pressure. The key on the side of the box operates the electrophorous contact plate made of tin which gathers charge from the wax block, at the same time the key operates the hydrogen valve. The resulting jet of flame was then directed to the wick of an oil lamp (olonger extant).
