The scale is engraved over white and is picked out in black and reads in 1 degree divisions marked at 10 degree intervals from 30-130 , the scale can be read from 25-130 degrees but the start of the scale is not marked. MANU Richardson Adie & Co Ltd second half 19th century Edinburgh Scotland Discovered in the miscellany when the material was transferred from Physics and Astronomy in 1992. The instrument works as a maximum thermometer by having a choke in the bore of the capillary just below the scale approximately 20mm above the bulb. When the mercury rises up the capillary and registers a temperature the moment that the temperature falls the mercury column breaks due to the surface tension exerted at the top of the column being greater than that in the choke.
