England DES after GEISSLER,Johann,Heinrich,Wilhelm. 1855 Bonn, Germany. This is an oscilloscope tube. The discharge on the electrodes is proportional to the voltage applied and in AC operations, when it is viewed in a revolving mirror at the correct speed, the discharge appears as a wave form. These tubes were used to calibrate X-ray tubes so that patient doses and photographic exposures could be adjusted. The electrodes are connected via composite lead in wires at each end of the tube to terminals with knurled nuts attached to the end caps. The electrodes are of equal length and are positioned axially along the tube. the gap between the aluminium electrodes is approximately 2.5mm. The discharge at the cathode appeared blue whilst that at the anode a reddish purple.
