This is a 600 MHz UHF micropup pulse modulator transmitting triode with an independently heated filament (cathode). It was forced air cooled to dissipate the heat generated at the anode. Used in push pull configuration the pulse output of a pair of these valves was apparently about 40kW. There is no base to the valve and the filament (cathode) and heater connections lead directly through the bottom of the envelope, the copper plate (anode) was bolted to the 500 volt supply and the control grid connection screwed directly into the top of the valve. The cathode is a thoriated tungsten rod and the heater a coaxial tungsten helix . The valve was evacuate via a side mounted pintel at the filament (cathode) end of the envelope.
The micropup valve was developed by GEC at their Hirst Laboratories at Wembley in 1936. The 20163W serial number shows that this valve was also made there. Micropups were originally designed for use in naval range finding equipment and early Chain Home radar but they were quickly adopted for other radar applications including airborne radar where it was superceded by the cavity magnetron for centimetric radar in 1941.
