DES after TROST,A. circa 1935 Germany DES after GEIGER,Hans,Wilhelm,Professor and MULLER,Walther. 1928 Keil University Germany DES after MAZE,R. 1946 This is a scintillation or gas proportional Geiger-Muller counting tube. The anode is a tungsten wire stretched the length of the tube . The cathode is the aquadag coating on the inside of the tube. This is a mixed polyatomic gas filled tube with a maximum operating voltage of 1140V. It should be noted that these tubes were hand made and each tube was different requiring individual calibration to determine it's counting charactaristics and it's particular maximum operating voltage. It is not known which gases were used in these commercial tubes but earlier experimental types were evacuated and then filled with argon and alcohol at partial pressures of 10cm and 1 cm of mercury. the poly atomic gas prevented a charge building up on the cathode allowing the tube to operate at higher speeds. This type of tube was called a 'fast counter' although the term is confusing since the actual counting speed of the 'fast counter' was slower than that of a 'slow counter'.
