Description: | s.d. inscr. base "DAVID DALE / 1791 / Tassie F" CRE TASSIE, James; (Scottish; 1735-1799) 1791 Initially an apprentice weaver in Paisley, Dale grew prosperous as a linen agent. In 1784 he began cotton spinning on a huge scale at New Lanark. By the 1790s over 2,000 people, including 500 children, lived in New Lanark village. The medallion portrait of this philanthropic industrialist was probably modelled in Glasgow, where Tassie took the portraits of many other merchants and industrialists.
