Description: | s.d. inscr. base "L.C. ELDER / ROYAL / EDIN. VOLUNTEERS / 1795 / Tassie F" CRE TASSIE, James; (Scottish; 1735-1799) 1795 Details of Elder's early life and education are not known. He set up as a merchant in Edinburgh, joining the town council, and became master of the Merchant Company in 1779. Elder held the office of Lord Provost of Edinburgh on three occasions (1788-90; 1792-4 and 1796-8) and maintained close ties to the University of Edinburgh. The foundation stone of the new building was laid during his first term in office and he was able to use his influence to install his son-in-law, George Husband Baird, as principal in 1793. Elder died in the Perthshire parish of Clunie, where he had been born, in May 1799.
