Description: | s.d. inscr. base "HENRY MATY A M UNDER / LIBRARIAN OF THE BRIT / MUSEUM 1786 Tassie F / DIED 10 JAN 1789"
CRE TASSIE, James; (Scottish; 1735-1799) 1786 A graduate of Trinity College, Cambridge, Maty became an assistant librarian in the British Museum in 1776 and in 1782 was promoted to under-librarian in the department of natural history and antiquities. Maty was elected a member of the Royal Society in 1772 and became principal secretary in 1778. Unfortunately, however, he became embroiled in controversy and this was not viewed favourably by the members because in his position he was not expected to participate in the debate. Peace was restored to the Society in 1784 with Maty's resignation, and he was forced to give instruction in classical and modern languages in a bid to make up his income. When he died in 1787 his wife and son were left virtually penniless.
