Description: | none DES KERR,John,Reverend circa 1878 Glasgow Scotland MANU Unsigned. circa 1878 Glasgow Scotland This is a liquid cell made of a finely shaped cube of glass with bevelled and polished edges. The cell has three holes all three of which intersect at the center of the cube. The filler hole is drilled into the top of the cell and the electrodes in the form of screws in corks are fitted to one of the other holes the cell is formed by the third hole and two glass plates clamped to the block by two brass springs.
Kerr filled the cell with dielectric liquids such as nitrobenzene, dichloromethane and carbon disulphide. To demonstrate 'the Kerr electro-optic effect' the cell was connected to a high voltage source, about 4 Kv, in the form of a Rumkorff induction coil or a Holtz influence machine. Kerr found that the plane of polarisation of light passing through the cell was rotated.
