Description: | No.17 (written on a paper label, removed and disposed of due to heavy contamination with the gum from decomposed cellotape). 220b (written on a paper label found under another which read), LMP 221(a) (both are spurious departmental catalogue numbers added by Dr Dereck Stewart on transfer of the material, both labels discarded). 30MeV LMP 20 ( rating and old departmental catalogue number written on a self ahesive plastic label which seperated on removal leaving the writing on the surface of the adhesive, discarded). MANU Unsigned. circa 1948 DES after VEKSLER and MCMILLAN. 1945 This do-nut was used in a 30 MeV synchrotron obtained from Harwell, circa 1951, to allow research to be done whilst the 330 MeV machine, was being built by Metropolitan Vickers Ltd. The completion of this machine, which was to have been commissioned in 1951, was delayed until 1954. Both machines were housed in a new, Basil Spence designed, extension to the Kelvin building which was completed in 1951.
The 30 MeV machine was used for nuclear photodisintegration studies in association with cloud chambers. The source of photons was usually a klystron for this range of instrument. The photons were then accelerated round the do-nut by powerful electromagnets. The magnetic field also allowed them to be stored there until required.. The copper tubing and bronze fittings were for dissipation of heat by cooling water also for the attachment to a vacuum pump and the klystron etc.
