This smoked glass plate has six traces from anadjustable tuning fork. It was possibly recorded by passing the plate below a horizontally mounted tuning fork. The plate might have been driven by clockwork or a governed falling weight. A scribe was attached to the end of one of the limbs of a tuning fork which was clamped to a stand above a smoked glass plate, which was held by a trigger. The fork was set, by moving adjustable riders on its limbs, to a particular frequency and the trigger released. The plate would have ideally been positioned some distance away from the fork, so that the effects of acceleration could be avoided. However, another method would have been to use a falling plate apparatus which would have dropped the plate under the influence of gravity. There is evidence in the record of bunching of the vibrations at one end of the trace and attenuation at the other. This is indicative of the plate being accelerated during the period of recording.
