Description: | KMI.12.S. (Green and Lloyd catalogue number in white paint). NO. 986 10 Amps 100 Volts (the serial number current capacity and maximum operating voltage written on the base). No 986 (instrument serial number stamped on the pendulum bob). PD 65.66 stamped on the pendulum bob). (five dials with one pointer each on a circular scale reading ) 0-9. 10,000 (presumably the dials read in units of electricity from 1-10,000). BOARD OF TRADE UNITS AT 100 VOLTS. + (white stencil next to the positive terminal). DES THOMSON,William,Lord,1st Baron Kelvin of Largs. after 1884 DES after FARADAY,Michael. 1831 The Royal Institution of Great Britain, 21 Albemarle Street, Lond This integrating instrument primarily designed for use in domestic lighting circuits is basically a pedulum clock with the " driving weight" provided by a soft iron core in a solenoid. The amount of current in the circuit between the mains supply and the lamp terminals determines the position of the iron core. The more current flowing the higher the iron is drawn into the solenoid which thereby increases the rate of the clock. The rate of consumption of electricity in the circuit is recorded by the series of dials, connected by a train of gears, which is driven by friction between a brass wheel and the iron core in a second solenoid which is linked to the escapement of the clock via a cam and crank system. This controls the movement of the iron core in the second solenoid. As the core moves up the the brass wheel turns the dial one unit. The cam diengages the friction drive and resets the core. and the process is repeated. As each unit is added the gear train automatically integrate the units into a running total.
