Ltd circa 1905 68 Cornhill, London, England DES after NICOL,William,Professor. 1838 Edinburgh, Scotland. DES after FUESS,Heinrich,Ludwig,Rudolf. 1870 Wasserthorstrasse, Berlin, Germany. Petrological monocular microscope with a Fuess synchronous attachment, which has a rotating motion imparted to the two Nicol prisms in the optical train. The polariser is in a substage swivel assembly which allows it to be removed from the optical train. The analyser sits over the ocular (eyepiece) and is on a hinge so that it can also be moved out of the optical train. The polariser analyser combination shows up the birefringence colours of minerals by polarising the light that has passes through them. The system is in effect a monochromater that works by having two swivelling prisms that double disperses the light passing through a mineral to analyse the wavelength of the transmitted light in Angstroms. Housed in it's original mahogany case with attachments for spare objective lenses. It is mounted upon a horse shoe base with a rectangular pillar. Inside the case was found a spare C Reichert objective lens which is now classified under HUG490. The substage assembly includes an Abbe condenser, an iris and a double mirror. The material making up the crossed Nicols is unknown but looks to be calcite. | License: | http://www.hmag.gla.ac.uk/spirit/rights/ | Publisher: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Rights holder: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Subjects: | SCIENTIFIC COLLECTION : | Source: | Hunterian Museum | Creator: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Identifier: | http://www.huntsearch.gla.ac.uk/cgi-bin/... | Language: | en-GB | Go to resource |
