Description: | E.124. (Olddepartmental number in black cellire ). W.B. NICOLSON GLASGOW (stamped on the top of each leyden jar). DES after VOSS,J.,Robert. 1883 MANU W.B. Nicolson. circa 1895 54, Garnet Hill, Glasgow, Scotland. DES after VOLTA,Alessandro,Giuseppe,Anastasio,Count. 1775 Como, Italy. DES after HOLTZ,Wilhelm. 1865 Germany This four plate instrument can generate a spark of at least 13 inches with only light cranking circa 5.4 plus Mev. It should be noted that at this length of spark the operator can be closer to a conductor than its opposite and is therefore in great danger of becoming part of the circuit. This is a self exiting induction or influence machine. The plates are driven by a set of three pulleys on a hand cranked shaft. The outer pulleys drive the outer plates. The inner pulley drives the both the inner plates but because the drive belt is crossed they rotate in the opposite direction to the outer plates. Charge is developed by the friction of air over the plates and is transferred from the surface of the glass by copper foil plates attached around the periphery of the plates by balsam. The charge both negative and positve is collected by brass brushes and combs and distibuted to the electrodes by brass rods. The pulley casing and the inner plates are electrically connected by a series of short platinum wires solder into a single conductor which runs from the brushes to the casing viathe inide of the mahogany frame of the glass cover. There are two Leyden jars which sit on tin foil discs.kept in electrical contact by a strand of copper wire. | License: | http://www.hmag.gla.ac.uk/spirit/rights/ | Publisher: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Rights holder: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Subjects: | SCIENTIFIC COLLECTION : | Source: | Hunterian Museum | Creator: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Identifier: | http://www.huntsearch.gla.ac.uk/cgi-bin/... | Language: | en-GB | Go to resource |
