DES after BENNET,Abraham. 1786 Wirksworth, Derbyshire, England. This electroscope is a Wilson ionization electroscope. The brass clip held a glass scale and hence the instrument could be more correctly called an electrometer.
The ionizing source was inserted through the small angled port on a pin. The metal foil is insulated from the ionising chamber by an amber seal and can be connected to an electrometer via an electrical connection on top. The gap between the ? platinum electrodes is adjustable and they are electrically connected via the silver plated ionizing chamber. The chamber is insulated from the stand by a stub of ebonite.
In effect the instrument measured the conductivity of the ionised gas in the chamber.
