This apparatus is a in the form of a frame made of brass which holds two discs of glass: one with an optically flat surface the other with a spherical convex surface. It demonstrates the interference due to reflection of light between the two surfaces which appear as concentric rings of coloured light. If the top glass is reversed the surface is now concave and the pattern is in the form of a cross. The gap between the plates is in the order of magnitude equal to the wavelength of light. For example at n = 1, where n is the number of the band of light, the thickness of the gap is equal to (n-1/2) multiplied by half of the wavelength of the light. Therefore constructive interference occuts at gap thicknesses of 0.25, 0,75, 1.25...... times the wavelength of light.
