inscr. in pencil "B 102/ CD92" CRE DURER, Albrecht; (German; 1471-1528) The inscription below the image is a quotation from Virgil, Aeneid III, 490, where Andromache likens Aeneas's son Ascanius to her own (and Hector's) lost son, Astyanax. Possibly Durer had such a quotation in his commonplace book, if he kept one. He played with the idea of the artist representing the physique - but not the mind - of his sitters in his engravings of Martin Luther and of Philip Melanchthon.
