MANU Unsigned. 19th or 20th century DES after MACINTOSH,Charles. circa 1790 This is a Twaddell hydrometer used for determining the density of a fluid with a specific gravity greater than one. Hydrometers are sometimes called areometers or araeometers and are based on Archimedes principal of floatation. That is a body wholly or partially immersed in water will displace its own weight of water. To transform a twaddell number to a specific gravity; the number read from the scale is multiplied by 0.005 and added to 1.
