DES after MACINTOSH,Charles. circa 1790 Glasgow, Scotland. This hydrometer is based on the Twaddell hydrometer used for determining the density of a fluid with a specific gravity greater than one. Hydrometers are sometimes called areometers or araeometers and are based on Archimedes principal of floatation. That is a body wholly or partially immersed in water will displace its own weight of water. To transform a Twaddell number to a specific gravity; the number read from the scale is multiplied by 0.005 and added to 1. A degree Twaddell equals 200 times the density of a liquid at 60 degrees Fahrenheit divided by the density of distilled water at 60 degrees Fahrenheit; minus 1. This hydrometer has a scale that has been converted from the Twaddell scale to a specific gravity scale multiplied by 1000. It was designed for measuring the specific gravity of the sulphuric acid solution used as an electrolyte in batteries and accumulators.
