Description: | volume inscr outside plate r. c. "XXXIV"; inscr by collector Robert Scott on plate in pencil beneath engraver's signature "RS" CRE STRANGE, Robert, Sir; (Scottish; 1721-1792) AFTER PARMIGIANINO, Francesco Mazzola; (Italian; 1503-1540) The engraver Robert Strange was in Naples in 1762 to make drawings of great paintings, and he engraved this design afterwards in London. Strange's inscription "Parmigiani amica" on this work is, according to Padre Ireneo Affo, the modern origin of the belief that Antea, subject of a more famous female portrait in Naples, was Parmigianino's mistress. The volume was bound by J. Carss & Co., book binders active in Glasgow in the early 19th century, and described by Dibdin as "the favourite bookbinder among the cognoscenti at Glasgow". | License: | http://www.hmag.gla.ac.uk/spirit/rights/ | Publisher: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Rights holder: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Subjects: | WOMAN : PORTRAIT : REPRODUCTIVE : BEAUTY : HAIRSTYLE : CHILD : | Source: | Hunterian Museum | Creator: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Identifier: | http://www.huntsearch.gla.ac.uk/cgi-bin/... | Language: | en-GB | Go to resource |
