King George III commissioned Zoffany to paint his new Academicians, including Hunter, as Professor of Anatomy. Hunter's central position, carefully watching the setting of the model by the Keeper, George Michael Moser, indicates his importance in all matters concerning the human body. The painting represented in Earlom's engraving after Zoffany is, of course, not a genuine life class. However, it represents the end to which the study of the antique and anatomy were put: the representation of the living body. Hunter did not own an impression of this mezzotint, but at some point he did acquire Zoffany's later painting, of himself lecturing. The present image documents the first of the plaster ecorche figures made by Hunter in about 1750, which he used to teach about the muscles to the artists of the St Martin's Lane Academy. The figure no longer exists, but is known to have been transported in 1767 with the load of 'Anatomical figures, bustos, statues, lamps, and other effects' to Market Lane, Pall Mall, to the building that became the School of the New Royal Academy (John Sunderland, John Hamilton Mortimer, Walpole Society, Vol LII, 1986, p.10).
