Published by Charles Rogers (1711-1784), an eminent eighteenth century collector, it consists of 112 prints accompanied by introductory texts on the artists represented. It highlights the wealth of old master drawings held in contemporary private British collections and is among the most impressive art historical writings of 18th century England.
This is one of 42 drawings from Rogers' own collection, one of the best in the country.
The original drawing is a study for a painting, dated 1658-66 and now lost. Rogers states in his notes that the image refers to the legend relating how, after Christ's ascension to heaven, Mary Magdalene went out to live in the desert for thirty years in pursuit of divine contemplation.
Much of Mola's career was spent in Rome but he trained for two years with Albani in Bologna. He was a prolific draughtsman. This is one of two drawings by him represented in the volume (Glaha 9026). | License: | http://www.hmag.gla.ac.uk/spirit/rights/ | Publisher: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Rights holder: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Subjects: | SINNER : SAINT : MARY MAGDALEN : NEW TESTAMENT : IMITATION : DRAWING : STUDY : RELIGION : DESERT : REPRODUCTIVE : HUNTER VOLUME : BIBLICAL : | Source: | Hunterian Museum | Creator: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Identifier: | http://www.huntsearch.gla.ac.uk/cgi-bin/... | Language: | en-GB | Go to resource |
