Description: | RU Signed and dated "Rembrandt f. 1633" CRE REMBRANDT, Harmensz van Rijn; (Dutch; 1606-1669) Printed with considerable plate tone, especially to create solidity of the figure, and to darken the face which is represented in shadow. Fascinating as they are as images of the artist, Rembrandt's self-portraits are part of his training, in studying his own expressions, and effects of lighting, for use in history paintings. Rembrandt's studio practice is reflected in the book by his pupil Samuel van Hoogstraten, whose Introduction to the Art of Painting, advises pupils to be 'at the same time actor and spectator in front of a mirror.' | License: | http://www.hmag.gla.ac.uk/spirit/rights/ | Publisher: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Rights holder: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Subjects: | SELF-PORTRAIT : TRONY : TRONIE : LIGHTING STUDY : GOLDEN AGE : SELF PORTRAIT : | Source: | Hunterian Museum | Creator: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Identifier: | http://www.huntsearch.gla.ac.uk/cgi-bin/... | Language: | en-GB | Go to resource |
