The 'Entombment' (GLAHA 52016), and 'Christ in Limbo' (GLAHA 48) are also in the collection. There has long been debate about the attribution of this engraving to Mantegna. Bartsch identified only seven engravings which he believed to be by the master, and this is not one of them. Even if it were by his hand, its apparently unfinished state may indicate that it was not printed until after his death. The Passion series displays stylistic parallels with the frescoes in the Ovetari Chapel in Padua, and the engraving is similar in compositional structure to Piero Della Francesca's Flagellation (Galleria Nazionale, Urbino). Dürer's drawings reveal that he studied prints by Mantegna, making copies on his first visit to Italy in 1494.
