Regis -"; Inscr in plate in oval border "PHILIPPE FILS DE FRANCE DVC D'ORLEANS FRERE VNIQVE DV ROY LOVIS QVARTORZE"; inscr on scroll "Vltimos licentiae Theologicae labores / dicat, vouat, conservat / Humillimus Servus G H Le Jay." CRE NANTEUIL, Robert; (French; 1623-1678) NFA and NACF assisted purchase. Used to decorate the thesis of Guillaume-Henri Le Jay. LABEL Philippe de France, known as 'Monsieur', was Louis XIV's only brother, and occupied a prime position at the court of the Sun King. Here, Nanteuil's skill lies in capturing the likeness of this outrageously effeminate man known for his extravagant taste within a dignified court portrait. Through his accurate images of the leading men of his time, the artist influenced his contemporaries as well as the French and Flemish engravers of the late 17th and 18th century. | License: | http://www.hmag.gla.ac.uk/spirit/rights/ | Publisher: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Rights holder: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Subjects: | PORTRAIT : ARMOUR : THESIS : FLEUR DE LYS : MAN : NACF : | Source: | Hunterian Museum | Creator: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Identifier: | http://www.huntsearch.gla.ac.uk/cgi-bin/... | Language: | en-GB | Go to resource |
