Description: | DES MACKINTOSH, Charles Rennie; (Scottish; 1868-1928) Mackintosh furnished his dining room with examples of the chair he had designed in 1898/9 for Catherine Cranston's city-centre Argyle Street tea rooms. The chairs marked a crucial point in Mackintosh's career, as part of his first major furniture commission, and his first high-back design. The design is a remarkably sophisticated amalgam of rectilinear and curvilinear forms. Notice the curves in the front and side rails of the seat and the headpiece, and the changing sections of the back posts, which progress from rectangular at the base to circular at the top. The construction is a jigsaw of interlocking pieces: the two back panels slot into the head piece which in turn slots into the back posts.
The horsehair upholstery was originally a bright blue and black chequer, but this has now faded. The image shows the item on public display in The Mackintosh House at the Hunterian Art Gallery. | License: | http://www.hmag.gla.ac.uk/spirit/rights/ | Publisher: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Rights holder: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Subjects: | FURNITURE : DECORATIVE ART : CHAIR : HIGH-BACKED CHAIR : LUNCHEON ROOM : ARGYLE STREET TEA ROOMS, GLASGOW : CRANSTON, CATHERINE : CRM ONLINE : | Source: | Hunterian Museum | Creator: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Identifier: | http://www.huntsearch.gla.ac.uk/cgi-bin/... | Language: | en-GB | Go to resource |
