Description: | 42.4 x 37.5 CRE ITALIAN SCHOOL ATTRI GIORDANO, Luca; (Italian; 1632-1705) CRE CASALI, Andrea; (Italian; 1705-1784) This painting from the founder, Dr Hunter's collection was first documented in the Hunterian Museum by Laskey in 1813 as "26 Female Head......Luco Giordiano". This attribution is clearly wrong. Since it represents (a slightly clumsy) exploration of 'di sotto in su' painting, it may fit into the category of head study, and since Hunter knew the Italian artist Andrea Casali it is possible that this work is the '50. Head in the manner of Lanfranc' which Casali exhibited at the Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures, Commerce in 1769 (Graves, p. 53). Hunter had a number of head studies in his collection of pictures, by Rubens, Sacchi, Murillo, and Feti, as then attributed. For Hunter's Danae, a major work by Casali see GLAHA 43533. | License: | http://www.hmag.gla.ac.uk/spirit/rights/ | Publisher: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Rights holder: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Subjects: | HEAD : FEMALE : HUNTER 2007 : BACCHANTE : HEAD STUDY : SOCIETY FOR THE ENCOURAGEMENT OF ARTS : | Source: | Hunterian Museum | Creator: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Identifier: | http://www.huntsearch.gla.ac.uk/cgi-bin/... | Language: | en-GB | Go to resource |
