Description: | 60.0 x 77.0 s. b.c. "GFG" CRE GRIMALDI, Giovanni; (Italian; 1606-1680) This signed painting on copper is by the Bolognese painter Grimaldi, whose works, especially drawings, are sometimes confused with that of more famous pupils of the Carracci school. When the painting was acquired by the founder, Dr Hunter in 1771, the figures were attributed to Domenichino. The subject is taken from the 'Book of Tobit' in the 'Apocrypha'. Tobias, instructed by the Archangel Raphael, catches a fish and cuts out its heart, liver and gall, which he later uses to drive away a demon and cure his father's blindness. Artists working in Italy in the 17th century often used a copper support because of the brilliance it gives to the colours. | License: | http://www.hmag.gla.ac.uk/spirit/rights/ | Publisher: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Rights holder: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Subjects: | MYTHOLOGY : BIBLE : APOCRYPHA : FIGURE : SIR ROBERT STRANGE : ANGEL : LANDSCAPE : HUNTER 2007 : NIRP2005 : NIRP2005 : | Source: | Hunterian Museum | Creator: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Identifier: | http://www.huntsearch.gla.ac.uk/cgi-bin/... | Language: | en-GB | Go to resource |
