insc. on altar above Theagenes's back: "Theagenis equitis tessalonici et/ Charicleiae AEthiopiae Regis Filiae/ primus occursus in Dianae templo/ et erorum principium amoris". This inscription overlies an earlier version in Latin written in Greek letters. CRE HORIONS, Hans; (Dutch; c.1620-1672) The subject is taken from Heliodorus' 'Aethiopica', a 3rd-century romance (a Dutch translation was published by A. Roman in Haarlem in 1634). Charicleia, dedicated to chastity in the service of Diana, is assisting Calasiris, a priest of Apollo in a sacrifice at the altar in Delphi of Neoptolemus, son of Achilles. As she hands the torch to Theagenes, a Thessalian noble who comes to the temple to offer a sacrifice, the couple fall in love. A similar, signed composition by Horions is in the Centraal Museum in Utrecht.
Very few paintings by Horions are known, and this may be the most important. It is fully signed and inscribed with verses in Latin over Greek. A picture of this subject was in the collection of the Glasgow Academy of the Fine Arts, and was included in Robert Foulis's sale catalogue of 1776 (1st day, Lot 88, attributed implausibly to Raphael assisted by Giulio Romano). The Aethiopica appears very rarely in the history of painting, and only between 1600 and 1650. The first representations were those of Dubois at Fontainebleau, 1600-1606. Bloemaert may have played an important role in importing the theme to Holland for in 1625-6 he painted two works for Frederik Hendrik for his palace at Honselaarsdijk which was rebuilt in French style. In 1635 Bloemaert's pupil Honthorst painted four scenes from the Aethiopica which Stechow connects with the marriage in 1634 of Danish Crown Prince Christian and Magdalene Sybille of Saxony. Knupfer, also a pupil of Bloemaert, was commissioned to paint 3 pictures by the King of Denmark in 1649, and another Knupfer Theagenes painting in the University of Stockholm may have originated in Denmark.
