Description: | 71.0 x 105.0 CRE MOUCHERON, Isaac de; (Dutch; 1667-1744) Landscape at Cleves is a copy by Isaac de Moucheron of a work by his father Frederick, who was also an esteemed landscape painter. The original Cleve motif dates to the early to mid-seventeenth century, to the time of Johan Maurits van Nassau, who from 1648-1666 had many Dutch artists working at his court. The subject matter proved popular in the late 17th to early 18th centuries, and many artists have painted or engraved views of the picturesque German town of Cleves, where Henry VIII's fourth wife Anne of Cleves was part of the ruling family.
Most of the picture, including the architecture and landscape, is an exact copy of Frederick de Moucheron's painting, which depicts Schwanenburg Castle to the left, and the lower town of Cleves to the right; the artist has added figures of his own invention however, including a pastoral scene of a shepherdess and her goat. A possible hint towards the date of the painting is given in an Italian landscape from 1698, which bears a markedly similar signature to the Hunterian work (the curlicued capital J, followed by Moucheron f. or fecit.). This signature style appears fairly distinctive to a certain period, and it has been suggested that the capital I/J signatures on Isaac's works are post-1697. | License: | http://www.hmag.gla.ac.uk/spirit/rights/ | Publisher: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Rights holder: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Subjects: | LANDSCAPE : FRANCE : ANIMAL : GOAT : FIGURE : RIVER : BOAT : TOWN : | Source: | Hunterian Museum | Creator: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Identifier: | http://www.huntsearch.gla.ac.uk/cgi-bin/... | Language: | en-GB | Go to resource |
