Another portrait of her by Reynolds is in the Wallace Collection, London. The pedestal against which Nelly O'Brien is resting is carved in relief, with Danae receiving her lover, Jupiter, in a shower of gold coins. The painting has darkened, this is no longer easily legible, but the original composition is clearly shown in a contemporary mezzotint copy."
John Hunter owned a portrait of Nelly O'Brien, which was lot 106 in his sale of 29/01/1794 at Christie's. There are several engraved versions of the Hunterian portrait. | License: | http://www.hmag.gla.ac.uk/spirit/rights/ | Publisher: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Rights holder: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Subjects: | PORTRAIT : FIGURE : FEMALE : COURTESAN : SCULPTURE : SYMBOLISM : CHASTITY : DANAE : IRISH : MG1 2007 : | Source: | Hunterian Museum | Creator: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Identifier: | http://www.huntsearch.gla.ac.uk/cgi-bin/... | Language: | en-GB | Go to resource |
