Description: | 82.0 x 95.0 s. "J.B.Weeni[x]" CRE WEENIX, Jan Baptist; (Dutch; 1621-1663) This is one of the few landscape paintings from the founder, Dr. Hunter's collection. His first love seems to have been Dutch painting, especially Rembrandt. This canvas appears to be the work of more than one artist. Although the seemingly genuine signature attributes the painting to Jan Baptist Weenix, only the detailed, Italianate figures of the shepherd boy and animals are in his usual painterly yet intricate style. Instead of being set in one of Weenix's characteristic Italianate landscapes, which he developed during a stay in Italy in the 1640s, these figures are combined with a background that is strongly Flemish in influence. The gnarled trees and the view that recedes to the horizon are both staples of Flemish landscape painting. Also, the horse and cart and the disproportionately large peasant girl holding the jug, which have been added on top of the background, are both reminiscent of the work of Rubens. The eclectic feeling generated by these radically different styles suggests the likelihood of unknown hands at work. This could be due to the painting being a studio product, to collaboration with another painter or to the painting being left unfinished by Weenix and completed at a later date by a different artist. Hunter bought the painting at a sale organised by Robert Strange in 1775 for 3½ guineas.
