MacTaggart 1894" CRE McTAGGART, William; (Scottish; 1835-1910) The seashore and the sea in all weather conditions were major subjects for McTaggart, with the frequent integration of foreground figures (often children) to inject human content into the overall scheme. The Kintyre peninsula, a three hour drive from Glasgow to the West, was close to his heart (he was borne there and often spent holidays at Machrihanish, located at the very tip of the peninsula. Sound of Jura was painted in 1894 during a six week stay, and later inspired a 7 feet sea piece dated 1902. Focusing on the vastness of the sea, it explores concepts of space, form and light which have much in common with continental modern art movements of the early twentieth century. | License: | http://www.hmag.gla.ac.uk/spirit/rights/ | Publisher: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Rights holder: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Subjects: | LANDSCAPE : SCOTLAND : SEASCAPE : CAMPUS : SCOTTISH 19TH CENTURY : CAMPUS : | Source: | Hunterian Museum | Creator: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Identifier: | http://www.huntsearch.gla.ac.uk/cgi-bin/... | Language: | en-GB | Go to resource |
