Description: | s. b. l. in black paint: "Peploe"; inscr on back of panel in biro "Casis / by S J Peploe"; Annan label on back; inscr on back in red pencil "The Paris American Art Co. / 185 Bould de Montparnasse / & / 2, rue Bonaparte / Paris" CRE PEPLOE, Samuel John; (Scottish; 1871-1935) This was painted in Cassis, South East of Marseille, during Peploe's second visit to the then quiet fishing village. He spent the summer of 1913 there with his family, Fergusson and Anne Estelle Rice. Label: "Peploe spent his first summer in Cassis, a picturesque Provençal harbour town, in 1913. This view of Cassis Church, constructed as a super imposition of planes, is reminiscent of Fergusson?s work in Royan. By contrasting the dark vegetation with the pale tones of the buildings and sky, Peploe successfully captures the light cast by a cloudy summer day in south-eastern France. The paint is applied with varying degrees of thickness, creating a three-dimensional surface which is also found in his tulip still-lifes on yellow backgrounds of c.1912, such as Still Life, Tulips and Vases." | License: | http://www.hmag.gla.ac.uk/spirit/rights/ | Publisher: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Rights holder: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Subjects: | LANDSCAPE : FRANCE : SCOTTISH COLOURIST : CASSIS : CITYSCAPE : CHURCH : | Source: | Hunterian Museum | Creator: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Identifier: | http://www.huntsearch.gla.ac.uk/cgi-bin/... | Language: | en-GB | Go to resource |
