The painting is on a standard white ground canvas laid on board of the sort Peploe often used between 1904 and 1909. It comes from a shop previously used by Whistler when in Paris.
Label: "This swiftly executed panel was painted during one of Peploe and Fergusson?s summer excursions to the fashionable beach resorts of Northern France. Etaples is at the mouth of the river Canche, on the English Channel, a few miles from Paris-Plage.
A finished work in its own right, the painting probably also acted as an aide-mémoire for a particular quality of light and as an exercise in recording how this light was reflected from the pale white bodies of the nude bathers." | License: | http://www.hmag.gla.ac.uk/spirit/rights/ | Publisher: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Rights holder: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Subjects: | FRANCE : ETAPLES : NUDE : BEACH : BATHER : SCOTTISH COLOURIST : SKETCH : | Source: | Hunterian Museum | Creator: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Identifier: | http://www.huntsearch.gla.ac.uk/cgi-bin/... | Language: | en-GB | Go to resource |
