Description: | RU "Rembrandt f. 1648"; verso: collector's mark: "JAMcC" (McCallum) CRE REMBRANDT, Harmensz van Rijn; (Dutch; 1606-1669) In his Leiden years, Rembrandt's beggars had real menace, grimacing at the viewer. In this later Amsterdam etching, the beggar family has dignity, as individuals and as a compositional group. The main focus is the coin offered by the old gentleman. The subject of charity suggests a work for the popular print market, but the subtlety of Rembrandt's treatment, especially the astonishing figure of the boy represented by his clothing alone, puts it into a different category. | License: | http://www.hmag.gla.ac.uk/spirit/rights/ | Publisher: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Rights holder: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Subjects: | FIGURE : FEMALE : MALE : CHILD : INFANT : OLD MAN : POVERTY : GOLDEN AGE : ALMS : GENRE : CHARITY : | Source: | Hunterian Museum | Creator: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Identifier: | http://www.huntsearch.gla.ac.uk/cgi-bin/... | Language: | en-GB | Go to resource |
